“It’s been six weeks, sir, and you still haven’t found her,” I said to the officer.
“We are fully aware of the time frame, young man. Thank you for contributing your input to the story, again. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have other matters to attend to for the day.”
Silently fuming, I tried to compose myself as I made my way to the office I had come to hate. Six weeks ago, life had been so different. Six weeks ago, my father still spoke at the dinner table, and my mother wasn’t a complete wreck. Six weeks ago, I still liked my internship in City Hall and still had visions of perhaps becom

There was always an awkward moment in the morning when I would have to wonder to myself, “Who will I wake up next to today?” It’s not like I made poor life choices; at least not over and over again, every night with a different girl anyway. If anything, you could say I made one life choice that just had a recurrent possibility of being a poor one. No, I physically woke up to the same girl every day, since we started dating seriously two years ago. It was always “which” Elle I woke up to that was the question. That fateful morning, I was fortunate: I woke up next to the Elle I fell in love with. I remember m

A Wise Man Once Said...
A wise man once said, “The more I know, the more I know I don't know.” Listening to the professor's wise words, the academy sent him out into the world with the intent that he learn all there was to master, leaving his beloved family alone to fend for themselves in the mean time.
While enlightenment is sometimes a longer process, the wise man did his best to learn all that he could, as fast as he could. Whilst he was gaining the knowledge that most would learn in a lifetime, the teacher did miss some important years of the growth of his little ones.
One day, having gained insight into the mysteries of the universe, the father

He sat there, dismally basking in the twilight that managed to struggle through the decrepit remains of the once glorious armored flotilla. Garbage and other wreckage, pieces of trinkets and scrapped innovations that no one desired any longer were strewn about it piles. It was as if, amongst the skeleton of the flotilla and around its general vicinity, a small scale cityscape had been accidentally erected; a monument to modern entropy at its finest. The worn out soul reached behind his back, grabbing his sole possession: a Hextech Army Knife. With skilled hands, he pried open the youngest descendent of the MacGyver's favorite tool and began t

After that day, the pair's little tradition changed. From then on, as suggested by Rii, "We should switch off, between The Corner and your apartment!" This was of course, fine by Virgil; He still opted to walk to The Corner on Thursdays to pick her up. At first, Rii didn't sleep over like she did the first time. But, after a month or so he was finally both getting used to having her in his apartment and tired of having to walk her home so late, since they always forgot the time. Virgil finally texted Rii one Thursday, earlier on in the day, "You know, you could just start staying the night on Thursdays? After all, I wouldn't want you to be la

In the beginning, Theodore was optimistic, figuring that rain really shouldn't last too long. Over time though, he found that he was wrong; almost a year later and it still persisted. And, though it invigorated those who drank it, he could hear it dropping with a mournful tone, as if whomever was causing it wished it wasn't 'necessary', though Theodore thought it wasn't anyway.
During this time, Theodore watched many things happen; changes both to and around Arthur on the outside world, what he came to describe as 'The Clan Wars' amongst the 'others' and Lentitudo's exercise of power. More than a few times it had become necessary for him to

As usual, Theodore sat at his post, watching the outer world spin 'round and 'round. What became unusual, however, was the scent in the air. Thinking back to when he had been "on the surface" Theodore tried to remember the scent. After a few moments, he identified it as being rain, though not quite the usual, metallic smell. He looked up to the skies, from his position amongst the tree branches in the center of the flat plain. Not once, since Lentitudo had taken control, had there been any kind of change on the plains. And yet, now it was raining. Stranger still, the rain was the colors of a setting sun, warm and welcoming, though it was stil

When Virgil finally felt that everything was in order, he walked out of the bathroom in a long-sleeved, black shirt he had gotten from a blood drive and a long pair of athletic, white shorts, as well as his usual black socks. He had donned what could have only been his back-up "standard-Virgil" black hat, considering the other one was soaked and his now mostly dry hair hung loosely over his eyes. Virgil looked over to see Rii calmly sitting on his couch with a smile and making a small patting gesture towards the cushion next to her. He sat down next to her and kinda just waited, it felt like.
As was the usual, Rii decided where she felt li

This time, the days between their meetings were far fewer in number though it felt increasingly longer to each of them, separately. So, both Virgil and Rii were fairly excited when the next Tuesday came around, followed by the 7 pm that was customary of Virgil's visits to The Corner. Sucking in his breath a little bit, Virgil pushed on the door and walked inside.
Rii was gazing out into the night, enthralled by the unnatural darkness created by the power-outage. Though they were more or less in the city, they were so far out on the city limits that they and the rest of their block weren't quite on the city's back up electric grid. So, she

The rest of the week went by without significance; though Virgil came back to the Corner on the following Thursday, as Auntie Lilian had told Rii, she was not there. So, with great trepidation, Virgil put off making his bi-weekly visit to the little cafe on Tuesday. It was getting late and had already grown quite dark by the time he finally brought himself to enter the little shop. With the chilling winter wind that ran uninhibited throughout the city's narrow causeways at his back, Virgil pushed open the door. A small chill ran up his arms and down his back, though he couldn't discern whether or not it was because of his anxiety or simply th

a simple concept from writing class, wherein, the story is infinitely better told by way of showing, rather than telling the reader what they should see. i wonder, is a mental picture still worth 1000 words?
but when i learn lessons, i like to apply them elsewhere in life. its gotten to the point where, for the most part i try to do more showing than telling. i try to listen more than i speak.
when one does this, you see much more and you hear much more. even in silence. even in non-action. the only problem being, that sometimes, some knowledge would be nicer to just not have.
oh well. guess it's just another case of the philosopher's para
It never gets old.
The best stories have a little bit of the truth mixed in. A little bit of real life sewn in amongst the fibers of the tale, a small sacrifice to pay for a story one can truly feel.
